.
This week we have been learning about birds, beaks and wings. Have a look at all the things we have been up to too.
We have been using our pelican scoopers to catch the fish. We scooped up the fish and then counted them. We remembered to put the fish in line and pressed each one as we counted them. Some of us caught more than 15 fish. We used the magnetic counters to check our counting and had a go at writing the matching numbers.
Creating Masterpieces
We have been creating some amazing pieces of work in our creation station. On Tuesday, we explored how we could use different textures and shades to make our own flamingoes. We used tissue paper, feathers and paint.
On Wednesday afternoon, we looked at the features of different birds. We then focussed on practising how we could draw the birds based on the shapes we could see. We used wax crayons to carefully match the colours to the pictures we could see. Our teachers were blown away by our creations!
This Thursday we had an exciting delivery of all different feathers. We were very excited by the peacock feathers. We looked at the different colours and lines that we could see. We decided it would be best to use thin brushes and crayons to make lines. We noticed that the colours went from light to dark and independently used black paint to make the green and blue darker.
On Thursday afternoon, we learnt about the wings of different birds and were amazed by their size. We went outside and worked in partners to draw around each other's arms, then we used cubes, pine cones and shells to measure our own wing span.
We were very interested in bird nests and looked at different types of nest and what they are made of. We worked as partners to make our own nests using natural materials. Have a look at our creations!
Penguin Pairs
We used the coloured penguins and the icebergs to show pairs to ten. We were great at subitising the groups and were able to show pairs like 5 and 5, 7 and 3 and 6 and 4. We enjoyed sharing our pairs with our friends and teachers. Lewis said "I have 7 and 3. There are 10 altogether".
Mark Making
We used large feathers to make marks on the paper. We turned the feathers into our own pens and dipped them into paint. We started making patterns but that was too easy. When our teachers came to look at our work they couldn't believe their eyes... We were writing words that ended with -ed! We have been learning how to do that in phonics this week. We wrote words like counted, painted and landed.
Playdough Making
This week we made our own playdough. We used cups and spoons to measure out the flour, oil, salt and water. After we made the playdough we used it sticks, corn, sunflower seeds and feathers to make birds and their nests. Some of us thought it would be a good idea to write some instructions we used like pour, scoop and mix to tell people what to do.
Potion Palace
Last week we worked with our teachers to make Potion Palace. This week we have been really excited about experimenting with mixing and whisking. We made milkshakes using coloured water and have created new flavours by mixing the colours. We discovered that whisking made bubbles and practised using small, quick movements. Some of us thought it might be a good idea to add washing up liquid to the mixture... we were amazed at how big the foam got!
Wonderful Water
We have redesigned our water area, and we couldn't be more excited! We explored pouring with different vessels and created our own slide for the fish using drainpipes. We quickly discovered that we needed lots of water to push the fish down the pipes. We also learnt how to use funnels to fill our containers.
Minibeast Mad
This week we have really enjoyed hunting for minibeasts. Little did we know it is minibeast week next week and our teachers just know we are going to love it. Look at the minibeasts we found this week! Stay tuned for next weeks updates...
