Celebrating languages across the world.
Today, for languages day, we have been learning about Mandarin, the language of China. We learnt the numbers 0-20 in Mandarin, we wrote our names in Chinese, learnt how to introduce ourselves (and that the surname goes first!), learnt how to eat chop sticks and tried prawn crackers.
Did you know?
*Mandarin is more widely spoken than any other form of Chinese – with some 955 million native speakers across the world. That’s 14% of the world’s total population. There are more native Mandarin speakers globally than speakers of any other language.
*Mandarin started developing 1,000 years ago
While written Chinese began to take shape around 4000 years ago, Mandarin started to develop in the 10th and 11th centuries in northern China.
*It uses 50,000 different characters, whereas we have the 26 letter English alphabet
We also played Mandarin bingo, saw cartoons in Mandarin and learned how to do Karate in PE!
