This term in science, we have been learning about rocks! The children used starburst sweets to represent the three different types of rocks – metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary.

They began by chopping up the rocks into small pieces of sediment, which represented the weathering that happens in rivers and lakes. Next, they combined these pieces by putting them under pressure to turn them into sedimentary rocks. To show metamorphic rocks, the children, then put more pressure and heat onto the starburst to show the change in shape that the rocks undergo to become metamorphic. Finally, the children, squished and squashed their starburst, as much as they possibly could to show igneous rocks, which come from molten rock from volcanoes or under the Earth's surface. Over the next two weeks in science, we are going to be finishing our rock topic by learning about fossils.
